[영어] Acronyms 두문자어 모음

두문자어 (Acronyms) : 말 그대로 각 단어의 머리글자만을 따서 만든 축약어의 일종이다. 한국어의 자민련, 노사모 등과 영어의 UN, NATO, DNA 등이 있다.

두문자어는 시간이 없을 때 유용하게 쓰일 수 있다. 대부분의 격식 있는 이메일에서는 두문자어를 쓰는 것이 적절하지 않지만, 영어에는 업무 현장에서 사용하는 다양한 두문자어들이 있으니 알아두는 것이 좋다.

 

• ASAP - as soon as possible (최대한 빨리)

E.g. “Please get me the full report ASAP.”

 

• FYI - for your information (참고로 - 알아두는 것이 좋을/알고 있어야 할 사항을 공유할 때 사용)

E.g. “FYI the meeting has been postponed until same time tomorrow.”

 

• BTW - by the way (그건 그렇고)

E.g. “BTW your breath stinks. Chew some gum.”

 

• EOD - end of day (하루의 끝, 업무 종료시간)

E.g. “I’ll have the files completed by Thursday EOD.”

 

• ATTN - attention (귀하)

E.g. “ATTN Bill Jones.”

 

• N/A - not applicable (해당사항 없음)

E.g. “What is your visa status?” “N/A” (because the person is a citizen)

 

• TBD - to be decided (미정, 추후 결정함)

E.g. “The convention location is still TBD.” 

 

• SFW - safe for work (업무용으로 확인해도 안전함, 반대말은 NSFW - not safe for work)

E.g. “Have a look at these photos from the swimsuit competition. SFW don’t worry.”

 

• RSVP - Répondez s'il vous plait (참석여부 등을 회신해주시기 바람)

E.g. “The party scheduled for 7pm, October 20. Please RSVP by the end of this week.”

 

• IMO - in my opinion (내 의견으로는)

E.g. The stock price is holding steady but will begin to fall soon IMO.

 

• JK - just kidding (농담이다) E.g. Hey everyone dinner's on me! JK

 

• TL;DR - too long; didn’t read (매우 긴 이메일에 대한 요약내용 - 긴 이메일의 시작이나 끝부분에 사용)

E.g. [장문의 이메일 끝부분에] “TL;DR. The CFO is visiting the office today and everyone should be on their best behavior.”

 

• IDK - I don’t know (모르겠다)

E.g. “Maybe we were supposed to call them back or something IDK.

 

• FWIW - for what it’s worth (내가 쓴 내용이 도움이 될지 모르겠지만)

 

• OOO - out of office (부재중)

 

• EOW - end of week (일주일의 끝)

 

• NRN - no reply necessary (회신 불필요)

 

• LET - leaving early today (오늘 조퇴할 예정)

 

• EOM - end of message (메시지의 끝)

 

• PRB - please reply by ... (...까지 회신 주세요)

 

• HTH - hope that helps (도움이 되길 바란다)

 

• WFH - working from home (재택근무 중)

 

• Y/N - yes or no? (네 혹은 아니오?)

 

• TYT - take your time (천천히 해라)
