<숫자읽기>

■ 콤마( , ) 단위로 끊어 thousand, million, billion, thrillion이라고 읽는다. ■ 5,000 → five thousand (5천) 5,000,000 → five million (5백만) 5,000,000,000 → five billion (5십억) 5,000,000,000,000 → five trillion (5조) 555,555,555,555,555 → five hundred fifty-five trillion, five hundred fifty-five billion, five hundred fifty-five million, five hundred fifty-five thousand, five hundred fifty-five

■ million 이상에서 콤마 ( , ) 뒤에 0이 아닌 숫자가 1~3개 있을 때는 콤마 ( , )를 소수점인 것처럼 읽고 그 뒤에 million/billion/trillion을 붙인다. ■ 555,500,500 → five hundred fifty-five point five million 555,555,000,000 → five hundred fifty-five point five-five-five billion

 

[예시]

● Korea Inc.'s business volume stood at $5,650,000 in 2004.

   $5,650,000 → five point six-five million dollars

   $520,090 → three hundred sixty-seven million, nine hundred eighty-seven thousand, three hundred twenty-one dollars

    $3,456,000,000 → three point four-five-six billion dollars

 

● The unit cost is $ 2.25. → two dollars and twenty-five cents

● Our sales jumped 39.04%. → thrity-nine point oh-four percent (oh를 zero라고 읽어도 됨)

● Our is 5/6 the size of theirs. → five sixths (1/6이 5개 있는 셈이므로 뒤에 -s를 붙임)

● We hold 3/4 of the domestic market. → three quarters (1/4는 quarter, 1/2은 half)

● Our stock prices went up two folds. → two times (3,4,5...배도 마찬가지로 folds 또는 times를 붙임)

● We had a two-fold increase in our sales. (two-fold가 형용사로 쓰일 땐 -s를 붙이지 않음)

● Our business tripled in five years. (3배가 되다 / 2배가 되다 : double / 4배가 되다 : quadruple)
